The pedestrian hub in the area of outstanding cultural interest near the Prado Museum and the Royal Palace of Madrid

Description:

Work involved the creation of a pedestrianized zone in an area of outstanding cultural and tourist interest in the historic centre of Madrid between the Prado Museum and the Royal Palace, comprising the streets of Sebastián, Príncipe, Matute, Milaneses, Santiago, Plaza de Ramales y calle Lepanto.

The objective of the work was to convert this hub to a pedestrian zone allowing only the restricted entry of essential vehicles by means of retractable bollards operated by remote control. It also featured improvements to infrastructure elements such as street lighting and sanitation and the replacement of paving (eliminating physical barriers to entry) as well as general improvements to the urban landscape. At the same time, the project created better pedestrian access to the internationally renowned site of the Royal Palace, which includes the Cathedral de la Almudena, the Royal Theatre and the Gardens of Sabatini in addition to the Palace itself.
